Dingy and dark homes that do not have enough natural light give a gloomy and depressing look. In such homes it becomes essential for homeowners to make up the shortfalls by installing enough artificial light. This may not be an eco friendly option and they may end up spending much on their energy bill. The best way to light dark homes is by going for skylight dome or daylighting system which not only saves energy but also light up your home brightly.

A skylight can give you the experience of an open sky in your home. It is much similar to windows, but with a difference that it is strategically placed on a roof to give more daylight. Skylights are ideal option when there are not enough windows in the home. They are installed in areas of the house where you require more natural light. They consist of a dome on the roof and a ceiling diffuser that lets the sunlight through. In some homes, a simple tube connects the diffuser and dome. 

There are different styles of skylights, such as round, flat, tubular, polygon, dome, pyramid and fixed skylights. Fixed sunlight is the most commonly used skylight. A skylight can be translucent or transparent and you can select it depending on your choice and the amount of lighting you require for a particular room. Usually, such windows are fitted into aluminum or wooden frame and are placed on the roof in a slanted position. This way the skylight diffuses maximum sunlight into the room. The translucent materials include fiberglass or polycarbonate whereas the transparent material is generally glass that lets more direct light compared to the acrylic material.

Daylighting system can also be called a tubular skylight. They have a dome on the roof with a diffuser in the ceiling. The dome and the diffuser are connected through a tube made of highly reflective materials. Daylighting system is a better option than traditional daylight. Unlike skylights roofs, it can be easily used in all types of homes, whether it is a one level home or multi level home. 

The daylighting design is not simply to provide enough daylight in a particular space. It also involves doing it in such a way so that there are no undesirable side effects. It not just adds skylight or windows to a space, but it also carefully balances heat loss and gain, glare control, and variations in the available daylight. For instance, a good daylighting design will carefully use the shading devices to reduce glare and excess contrast.
